GRAY

WANTED

In 1979, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Michael Holman formed an experimental band variously named ‘Bad Fools’, ‘Channel 9’ & ‘Test Pattern’, before settling on the Anatomy book-inspired: Gray. Performing at venues such as The Mudd Club, CBGB and Max’s Kansas City, Gray was a staple on the club music scene between 1979 and 1981. In May 1981, Basquiat had his first solo Gallery exhibition with Emilio Mazzoli in Modena. Shortly thereafter, he disbanded ‘Gray’ to focus solely on painting.

The present flyer is particularly notable for its design by Basquiat. Featuring a collaged portrait reminiscent of his ‘Anti-Product’ cards, as well as an early incarnation of his trademark child-like text, this extremely rare piece is an important addition to Basquiat’s graphic oeuvre.
