STRANDED, sPRING 1980
WANTED
Between 1977-1980, Lucy Sante (formerly Luc) oversaw the publication of Stranded magazine: a periodical comprised of submissions from various Artists, Authors and Poets. Though most contributors were employed at The Strand bookstore, the only mandate was each Artist was responsible for producing 200-300 photo-copies of their work depending on an issue’s distribution size.
For the 4th and final issue of Stranded, Sante asked Jean-Michel Basquiat to contribute a work of Art, offering to fund the cost to have the work photo-copied. Basquiat’s first submission was a heavily painted and collaged work on paper. Unfortunately, the work was too layered to be copied and a replacement was requested. Shortly thereafter, the presumably irritated Artist returned with a vintage photograph of a group of men with their eyes and mouths cut out; above their faces was the underlined word “Bad” and a cigarette was flattened in the bottom right corner. The work was published as such under Basquiat’s infrequently used alias: “Man-Made”.
