“There was so much art you could hardly tell where one piece left off and another began... Graffiti-like narrative artworks scrawled on the walls coexisted with a stairwell of genuine subway graffiti by Samo and a black-board of spectator comments.” - Kim Levin (p. 87)

In the June 1980 issue of ‘High Times’, Glenn O’Brien authored “Graffiti ‘80”: a survey of the Graffiti Art scene in New York City at the turn of the decade. Referencing the earliest practitioners Julio 204, Taki 183 and Stay High 149 to the contemporary work of SAMO© and the Fabulous Five members Lee Quiñones and Fred Brathwaite, O’Brien’s article provided a national platform for the popularization of Graffiti Art. Published the same month The Times Square Show opened, it was also likely the first time a color photograph of Jean-Michel Basquiat was reproduced in a periodical.
