“As it turns out, a graffiti artist also happens to be the greatest painter in the show. Look out world, JEAN MICHEL BASQUAIT [sic] is known to some as SAMO, but that's inaccurate. He and AL DIAZ were Samo. Now Jean is just Jean.” - Glenn O'Brien (p. 71)

In February 1981, Diego Cortez’ legendary “New York/New Wave” show opened at P.S.1, ushering in a new era of Contemporary Art. A polarizing exhibition, which conservative critics derided and progressive critics lauded, there was nonetheless virtual unanimity that Jean-Michel Basquiat was the star. For the April 1981 issue of Andy Warhol’s Interview Magazine, art critic Glenn O’Brien educated readers on the ‘New Wave’ movement and its visual expression via Cortez’ show. Having highlighted Jean-Michel a year earlier in his article for ‘High Times’, O’Brien would again shine a spotlight on Basquiat alerting the world to “Look out” for his ascending greatness.
