“There's obviously a head at work here, and a hand; if Basquiat can put them together so that one doesn't contradict the other, maybe he won't get ulcers while chewing the cud of success” - Jeanne Silverthorne (p. 83)

On the heels of Jean-Michel Basquiat’s first solo gallery exhibition at Annina Nosei Gallery in March of 1982, Jeanne Silverthorne’s review in the Summer 1982 issue of Artforum approached Basquiat’s work with caution. Like many, Silverthorne felt the young Artist’s newly found fame was a double-edged sword which led one to question his work’s quality and direction. Despite a largely unsupportive Critical environment, 1982 was a breakthrough for Jean-Michel whose work would be represented in no less than 6 solo and 20 group exhibitions throughout the year.
