“Basquiat's canvases are esthetic dropcloths that catch the leaks from a whirring mind. He vacuums up cultural fallout and spits it out on stretched canvas, disturbingly transformed” - Jeffrey Deitch (p. 49)

In a wide-ranging discussion which touched on many different issues, Edit DeAk and Diego Cortez provided readers with a ‘New Wave’ perspective on the New York Art Scene. Whilst they had differing opinions on the originality of the New York avant-garde, both expressed admiration for Graffiti Art, Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat.
This issue also lists all of the Artists selected for Documenta VII including Basquiat.
Lastly, Jeffrey Deitch reviews Jean-Michel’s first solo show at Annina Nosei Gallery. A glowing report which admires the Artist’s ability to synthesize Society, Spiritualism and Art History, Deitch also acknowledges, and rejects, the Artist’s stereotype as ‘primitive’.
