“Samo, the graffitist, seems perfectly at home amid the poststructural scribbling on these walls.” - Richard Goldstein (p. 31)

Only two weeks into the exhibition, The Village Voice was the first periodical to publish a review of The Times Square Show (TSS). For the June 16, 1980 issue, art critic Richard Goldstein presciently recognized the avant-garde exhibition as “The First Radical” show of the decade and briefly references the work of Jean-Michel Basquiat under his SAMO© alias. Organized by Colab artists Tom Otterness and John Ahearn, TSS was Basquiat’s first major public exhibition. Despite the collaboration between Al Díaz and Basquiat ending prior to the opening, Jean-Michel would continue to be identified as SAMO© until as late as May 1981 for his first solo gallery exhibition with Emilio Mazzoli.
This example includes only those pages discussing TTSS; it is not the full issue of The Village Voice.
