“Acid Flashes: Jean Michel "Samo" Basquiat's violently active drawings with their repetitive brut scribbles (a line of AAAAAs dominates his alphabetic punctuation), primary expressionist splatters, and skittish renderings of cars and faces... ” - Richard Flood (p. 87)

Curated by Diego Cortez, New York/New Wave at P.S.1 was a historic exhibition which, on the heels of The Times Square Show, provided many Artists their first institutional validation. In his article on the show for Artforum’s Summer 1981 issue, author Richard Flood eschewed standard review format in favor of brief impressions under headers such as “I Know What I Like”, “The Talking Head” and “Acid Flashes”. Specifically referencing the work of Jean-Michel Basquiat, Flood’s article captured the frenetic, unorthodox and disjointed edginess of this powerful statement on the Art of the present, and future. This issue also features spreads by Anselm Kiefer and an article by Rene Ricard on Julian Schnabel.
