Curated by Diego Cortez, New York/New Wave at P.S.1 was a historic exhibition which, on the heels of The Times Square Show, provided many Artists their first institutional validation. For John Perreault, however, the exhibition was mostly a forgettable melange of “self indulgence” and “the quasi-chic”. Though he references the work of Jean-Michel Basquiat in passing, Perreault’s article was notably critical of Cortez’ vision and did not single out any Artist as particularly worthy of praise. This issue also features a photographic spread by Robert Mapplethorpe and a calendar which references Keith Haring’s “Porn” show at Club 57.
